Exception or Rule of Life?

"O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water."
Psalm 63:1

David made it a daily practice to seek the LORD early and often.  He had the perspective that seeking and  communing with God was necessary for his life, even as those who exert themselves need to drink more water to stay hydrated.  In a dry and thirsty land where there was no water, God proved Himself able and powerful to reveal Himself to David--the God who gives living water for our souls.

It is important to realise seeking God for David was his rule of life and not just an exception in dire times of need.  We do well to examine ourselves and see what our established rules of life are, especially concerning seeking the LORD.  Considering this in light of diet and exercise is a good illustration to see why we can languish physically and apply it to our spiritual walk with Jesus as Christians.  I have discovered when I am disciplined to exercise daily as a rule, my physical health improves more than when exercise is an exception to my typical daily routine of being sedentary.  If I am watching my portions and being intentional to eat healthier foods as a rule, I can make an exception for occasional sweet treats without ill effect.  But if my rule of life slides into eating more than I need to and having dessert after every meal, I will not see any physical benefit from denying myself one dessert.

The spiritual impact of seeking God as an exception rather than our rule of life is seen in king Saul.  Saul was the sort of fellow who sought the LORD when he was faced calamitous trouble but not something he cared to do every day.  Early in his reign when Philistines mustered to attack, he offered a sacrifice to God out of the fear of man.  We do not read of Saul building an altar to God like Abraham or offering a sacrifice of thanksgiving like Solomon of his free will at any time.  Because seeking God was not his rule of life, when he tried to seek God he found it impossible--like people whose rule of life is binge eating junk food who hope skipping a meal will help them drop 20 kilos.  Towards the end of Saul's reign 1 Samuel 28:5-6 says, "When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. 6 And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets."  Saul's pride and self-confident rule of life exposed his poverty of heart before God, and when God did not answer when Saul hoped, he sought a medium in violation of God's word.  Doing his own thing and going his own way was Saul's rule of life, and thus his attempts to seek God were in vain.

David made seeking God his daily and continual practice, even as Daniel knelt three times a day and prayed facing Jerusalem.  When the command from Darius was signed into law that he alone could be the one to whom prayers were directed for a month, Daniel did not make an exception to his rule of life governed by God:  he turned towards Jerusalem with open windows and prayed to the God of Israel.  Now there is a man who obtained favour from God!  When he prayed for the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream, God answered with a vision in the night.  After being thrown into a den of hungry lions, God sent His angel to shut the lion's mouth all night and Daniel was unharmed.  God was with Daniel and gave him wisdom beyond his peers because he made seeking and praying to God his rule of life without exception.  It would have been easy for Daniel to become slack with devotion, reading God's word and worship of God when there was no temple, synagogue or priests in Babylon.  He sought the LORD as a man greatly loved of God, and he was told this personally by an angelic messenger because seeking God was Daniel's rule of life.

How about you?  Is seeking God early and meditating on Him night and day your rule of life or is it more of an exception to your normal routine?  Do not be surprised when you do not grow much spiritually or benefit much from times in prayer and Bible reading when you have reserved these activities only for trying times.  Reading the Bible for a few minutes will not offset all the nonsense we can meditate on as a rule throughout the day.  Worship God and make seeking the LORD your rule of life, and you will find yourself satisfied in Him regardless of your circumstances.  If you go to church, pray or wait on the LORD as an exception to your practice and rule of life governed by faith in God, don't be surprised when nothing seems to make a difference for you practically and spiritually.

Sizing Up the Temple

In the book of Revelation, chapter 11 begins with John being given a reed and told to measure the temple, the altar and those who worship there.  This prompted me to look at other times in the Bible where God's house was measured, notably in Ezekiel 40-43.  In the 25th year of Israel's captivity, Ezekiel saw a vision of the new temple that would be constructed in Jerusalem.  This would have been a thrilling revelation to Ezekiel and God's devout people who knew the temple had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians.  Ezekiel saw a man with a line of flax and a reed who carefully measured the temple and rooms in great detail.  Because this temple far exceeds the size and scope of the second temple--including the extensive renovations later done by Herod--many see this as the pattern of the Millennial temple which has yet to be built.

Ezekiel 40:4 says,  “And the man said to me, "Son of man, look with your eyes and hear with your ears, and fix your mind on everything I show you; for you were brought here so that I might show them to you. Declare to the house of Israel everything you see."  This is a good exhortation for all God's people to take to heart and practice, and it is really the purpose behind posting to this blog.  As the LORD opens our eyes to see and consider what we observe in the world and His word, we ought to value the wisdom of God above gold.  God revealed much to Ezekiel, not merely for his own training or edification, but to the end he would declare to the house of Israel everything he saw.  The point was hardly for people to look on Ezekiel as knowledgeable or clever, but that they would hear the word of the LORD and grow in the knowledge of God, His goodness and understand His plans for them.  God will be faithful to guide us into truth and will surely fulfill His promises.

After a length measuring session, Ezekiel 43:10-12 reveals one purpose of God sizing up this new temple in detail:  "Son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and let them measure the pattern. 11 And if they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the design of the temple and its arrangement, its exits and its entrances, its entire design and all its ordinances, all its forms and all its laws. Write it down in their sight, so that they may keep its whole design and all its ordinances, and perform them. 12 This is the law of the temple: The whole area surrounding the mountaintop is most holy. Behold, this is the law of the temple."  At one stage the children of Israel had a temple that stood in Jerusalem, and the fact it had been destroyed was a source of great grief and sadness.  God had given His people instruction and warnings in the Law of Moses they did not heed, and He sent many prophets to expose their sin and need for repentance.  Those people who felt ashamed for their sin that led to their exile, the overthrow of Israel and destruction of the temple were to be given more details concerning new designs for the temple.  People who lamented their sin and felt strongly the loss of the temple would rejoice in the hope of a new temple where holiness is the law.

Though God's people had been unfaithful to Him, He remembered them and would restore His people to their land.  A new temple would be built, and the sanctified descendants of the priests would again offer sacrifices to the God of Israel according to the Law.  People who would remain in captivity for decades would be brought out in due time as the LORD promised in Ezekiel 43:27:  “When these days are over it shall be, on the eighth day and thereafter, that the priests shall offer your burnt offerings and your peace offerings on the altar; and I will accept you,' says the Lord GOD."  The long season of captivity would end with acceptance by God when atonement was provided for sins.  By faith in Jesus Christ who shed His blood for sinners, Christians enjoy acceptance by God and are the temple of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.  By the Gospel we are "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" apart from the Law as Romans 10:4 affirms:  "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes."

Having been declared righteous by faith in Jesus our Saviour, we ought to embrace individually the law of the temple in Zion:  "Be holy, for I am holy."  The mountaintop was holy because God was there, and we ought to live holy lives sanctified by God's wisdom and word through the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.  We have been freed from the guilt and shame of sin, yet sin's shamefulness ought to remind us to heed the words of Christ and to obey Him, loving one another as He loves us.  Jesus would have us try on holiness for size, for we are thus clothed as God's people by spiritual regeneration and acceptance into God's family.  Our inspiration of obedience is the goodness of our God and the love He has poured out on us, and may we follow His example of holiness and wisdom always.

God Helps Us

I remember feeling a bit indignant in my youth when someone claimed a phrase quoted in Benjamin Franklin's 1757 Almanac was in the Bible:  "God helps those who help themselves."  While there is likely debate about where the maxim originated, there is no question theologically speaking it is heretical.  The sentiment denies the grace of God and suggests not only can we earn God's favour or help, but that we can indeed help ourselves!  Paul said that in his flesh dwelt no good thing, and he said this as a man filled with the Holy Spirit.  Indeed, only one born again and illuminated by the Holy Spirit could know and willingly acknowledge such a thing.

I was reminded of this quote by a similar comment quote from a politician in the news today.  In urging prospective voters to consider voting for her, it was reported she said:  "In just nine days, we have the power to decide the fate of our nation for generations to come. And on this day, then on this beautiful Sunday morning, I am reminded God expects us to help Him."  Elections can have a big impact on the policies and people in a nation (democratic or otherwise), yet it is God who raises up kings and deposes them (Daniel 2:21).  Like the quip parroted in the Almanac, the Bible never teaches or suggests God has any expectation or need for man to help Him:  it is always God who helps mankind.  He is the almighty, omnipotent God, and thus we perpetually need His help.

Based on these two quotes, it is evident some maintain an unbiblical stance concerning our self-sufficiency--that we can help ourselves, and God expects us to help Him.  It may surprise people Jesus explained God called Himself the Helper, the advocate of all who trust in Him.  Jesus taught His disciples in John 14:25-26:  "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."  Since the triune God identifies Himself as the Helper, to say we are expected to help ourselves or God is to suggest He is not uniquely divine and we are divine ourselves.  We are God's servants, and it is only with His help and empowerment can we begin to do His will and remain faithful.

In His grace God gives us the ability to help others on a human level, and it is good we realise this capacity comes from Him.  But let us not be deluded to proudly think God is reliant on our contributions for His plans to be perfectly administered.  The humble, godly attitude Jesus taught His disciples to embrace is summarised well in Luke 17:10:  "So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do."  God's love for us far exceeds the appreciation a master has for a faithful servant.  God does not expect us to help Him but He commands us to hear and do what He says.  It is God who helps His people as David sang in Psalm 28:7:  "The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him."

Made Up Worship

My evening Bible reading has been from the NIV, a translation I am not as familiar with as the KJV or NKJV.  I have found it to be more similar than those other versions than different, and sometimes there are renderings that put a fresh spin on verses I can finish by memory.  An example that illustrates this well is found in Isaiah 29:13:  "The Lord says: "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men."  This translation makes it abundantly clear how distant, impersonal and rule-oriented the worship of God had become.  God desired a relationship with the Hebrews made possible through faith in Him shown by obedience to His Law, yet it was reduced to what people did or didn't do.  Such "worship" falls woefully short of God's design.

People thought they were worshipping God through their offerings, sacrifices, tithes, songs and observances of feasts, and for those who trusted and loved God it was a genuine outlet of praise and thanksgiving in which God was pleased.  But God observed people who said the right things to honour God, yet their hearts remained far from Him.  Their worship of God was made up--it had become commands and prohibitions cobbled together by men who did not know God themselves.  This is not to say among the Hebrews there were not many people who knew and feared God in truth, yet God's judgment concerning these people who claimed to honour and worship God but remained far from Him is the point made.

Though worshippers remained distant from God, He followed up by saying in Isaiah 29:14:  "Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish."  God would confound the priests and Levites, the learned experts of the Law of Moses, and He would cause the studious and intelligent scribes to wonder.  He would blow their minds by exposing their spiritual poverty and lack.  They had been so focused on performing the letter of the Law according to tradition they missed drawing near to God and worshipping Him in spirit and in truth.  God would do a miracle in causing children to know and worship God with a depth they had not experienced.  We can be guilty of setting the bar exceedingly low for youth to desire holiness in the fear of God, but God would put this desire in their hearts by His grace.

See how the chapter ends in Isaiah 29:22-24:  "Therefore this is what the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, says to the house of Jacob: "No longer will Jacob be ashamed; no longer will their faces grow pale. 23 When they see among them their children, the work of my hands, they will keep my name holy; they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. 24 Those who are wayward in spirit will gain understanding; those who complain will accept instruction."  The God who redeemed Abraham would also redeem his wayward children.  The next generation would be the work of God's hand who would keep His name holy and stand in awe of God.  The wayward child and youth would grow in understanding of God and complainers would receive instruction by the LORD.  How awesome is God to do this, and He continues to do so to this day.

As children of God today by faith in Jesus, it is possible we sing worship songs in church and read the Bible as something we know is good and needful--but our hearts can remain distant from Him.  Spiritual disciplines can become a checklist we are not even faithful to do, and we can do them without our hearts being in it because our affections and desires are elsewhere.  Yet even if our lukewarm and hard-hearts set a lame example for others to follow, God is looking for those who worship Him in spirit and in truth.  As He spoke to young Samuel in the darkness, God continues to speak to children, youth and older people set in their own ways to draw us to Himself by a relationship with Jesus Christ.  As God's handiwork as Christians, let us acknowledge the LORD in all our ways, draw near to the God of Israel to stand in awe of Him, and gain understanding of God as we worship Him with our whole hearts--not reducing worship to rules we follow.

Poured Out to the LORD

A passage in scripture mentioned last night during Bible study was in my morning Bible reading today, the time when David's mighty men brought him water from the well in Bethlehem.  It seems they overheard David's longing for a drink of water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem and three of his mighty men decided to take action.  1 Chronicles 11:18-19 says, "So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD19 And he said, "Far be it from me, O my God, that I should do this! Shall I drink the blood of these men who have put their lives in jeopardy? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men."

After "breaking through" the camp of the Philistines, it is highly unlikely these men were unscathed.  When they returned from their dangerous journey, I imagine David looked at them all bloodied and battered and wondered what had happened.  When they produced water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem, David was appalled they risked their lives and shed their blood for his sake.  He looked at their bruises, lacerations and blood and felt unworthy to drink of the water that came at such a high price.  The risk involved with going to Bethlehem was likely a reason why David had not gone to Bethlehem himself, and why David had not led his men to the well by the gate to quench his craving.

David would not treat their blood like water or a common thing, so he treated the water they brought him from Bethlehem as their precious blood.  Though they urged him, David would not drink it.  He poured out all the water from the well of Bethlehem as an offering before the LORD, elevating their service, love and sacrifice as a most worthy and honourable gesture, and David gave to God the honour the LORD is worthy of by giving him his best and what he desired and prized greatly.  The thing David longed for he denied himself from drinking so God would be praised and glorified.  God is worthy of such self denial, and David's act teaches us the very thing we long for that we could have--or even hold in our hands--is worth giving to God to honour and recognise His greatness and our allegiance to Him.

In response to what David's men did out of love and loyalty for their future king, David used the water to express his love for God.  He denied meeting his physical needs and personal preferences to honour and praise the LORD in sincere worship.  The humility of David shines in this passage, for he demonstrated his unworthiness to receive of such great personal sacrifice only God is worthy of.  I do not believe it was a sin to drink the water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem, but David refused to do it because he loved God and others more than himself.  Solomon mused in Proverbs 5:16 on the subject of sexual thirst:  "Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, streams of water in the streets?"  The answer of course is no:  we ought to reserve the quenching of such thirst with our spouse alone.  God is worthy of abstinence, chastity, and monogamy in marriage.  Knowing Jesus has shed His blood to forgive us of all sin and filled us with the Holy Spirit, we are to keep our temple pure from fornication, pouring ourselves out as drink offerings unto our King Jesus.

The LORD with Us

One of the great compliments seen in scripture is all by God's grace given to people loyal and zealous for His sake:  that God was with a person.  Sometimes I have been riding along with a friend who is driving and takes a call on speakerphone.  As a courtesy so the caller knows the conversation is not private, typically my friend will say something like, "Ben's with me in the car."  If the person knows me we may even greet one another, and the phone conversation will continue.  Wouldn't it be amazing to call someone and hear them say, "By the way, God's with me."  For the believer in Jesus Christ, this can actually always be the case because our Saviour will never leave or forsake us.

In my morning reading, I came across a reminder of this in 1 Chronicles 9:20:  "And Phinehas the son of Eleazar had been the officer over them in time past; the LORD was with him."  What we see throughout Scripture is God draws near to those who draw near to Him, and He is with those who cling to Him in faith.  Phinehas was priest who was zealous for the LORD and God offered him a covenant of peace and an everlasting priesthood after he took a strong stand for God according to the LORD's command against idolators during the scandal of Baal-peor in Numbers 25.  Phineas was a man who feared God and was courageous to uphold God's word, and he was exactly the sort of person God wanted in His presence and service always.

There are many other people in the Bible who are identified as those whom God was with, and though God could not be seen with naked eye (being a Spirit), the evidence was undeniable and acknowledged by those who observed them.  1 Samuel 3:19 tells us of Samuel as a child:  "So Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground."  We read of Joseph whilst incarcerated in Egypt in Genesis 39:23:  "The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph's authority, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper."  1 Chronicles 11:9 says of king David, "Then David went on and became great, and the LORD of hosts was with him."  God's presence was also plain in the life of Solomon in 2 Chronicles 1:1:  "Now Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and exalted him exceedingly."  We can observe God's presence with people truly makes a man, as God causes words spoken to have impact, decisions to be wise and prosperous, to rightly wield authority and lead successfully.

As God was with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Jeremiah and an innumerable multitude of people we respect for their faith and obedience to God, so our LORD and Saviour has promised to be with us.  Jesus addressed His disciples with all authority given to Him in heaven and on earth in Matthew 28:19-20:  "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen."  Did you notice Matthew's "Amen" after the words of Jesus?  He agreed with the words of Jesus both in truth and personal experience.  Though Jesus ascended to the Father, the Spirit of Christ remained with the disciples of Jesus and all who abide in Him according to His covenant and promise.  Jesus fulfilled the sign spoken of in Isaiah 7:14, that a virgin would conceive and bear a son and call His name Emmanuel--God with us.  Knowing God is with us is an awesome reality for Christians today because He is our life and makes us men and women of God.  Amen!

Looking to the LORD

The children of Israel reveal how natural it is to go from looking to God in faith to what He has given us, to look to ourselves, resources and our God-given abilities rather than seeking and relying upon Him.  This is evident in the prophet of God's rebuke of Israel in Isaiah 22:8-11:  "He removed the protection of Judah. You looked in that day to the armor of the House of the Forest; 9 you also saw the damage to the city of David, that it was great; and you gathered together the waters of the lower pool. 10 You numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses you broke down to fortify the wall. 11 You also made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you did not look to its Maker, nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago."  When Jerusalem was damaged by enemies, they took it upon themselves to assess and repair the broken wall.  Afraid or unable to leave the confines of the city due to a siege, they broke apart houses to repair the wall when it was God who removed their protection.  Such efforts were futile when they were at war with God.

There is nothing wrong with engineers and builders repairing breaches in a wall to protect their city, houses and families.  The problem lie in that God's people had ceased communication with Him; they would not listen to His prophets and warnings of coming destruction.  The people imagined they were entitled to God's favour when He was longsuffering, merciful and gracious despite their rebellious ways.  They looked to the House of the Forest where their shields and weapons were stored, for they imagined it was up to them to defend themselves.  They aimed to shore up battered walls and defences when it was God who had protected them continually from before Israel was a nation.  The people gathered water to quench their thirst, preserve their lives and prevent the enemy from tapping into it when God had supplied water for their fathers from the rock when they dwelt in the wilderness.  Water was stored in a reservoir for the old pool, yet they did not look to the almighty God who is of old, from everlasting.

I like the rendering of verse 11 in the NIV:  "You built a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the Old Pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or have regard for the One who planned it long ago."  This verse presents the picture of men being quite impressed with their planning and accomplishment to build a reservoir, and they did not have respect or regard for God who planned it long ago.  It is true God is our Maker, and as Maker it implies He had a plan in all He has fashioned.  God planned to make Jerusalem the place where He put His name and provided the blueprints for the temple king Solomon would build there.  God provided all the materials and skillful workers to build a great house, to access the Gihon spring (that flows to this day), to build gates, walls and houses.  God who planned the construction of Jerusalem also planned for the destruction of the city, the correction of His people, and withdrew protection so His servant Nebuchadnezzar would accomplish God's will.  He also planned to restore His people to their land and to worship of His holy name in a rebuilt temple in due time.

God's good purposes and plans have continued to this day, for He has provided passages of scripture in the Old and New Testament to instruct and guide Christians who are new creations by the power of the Gospel.  Whatsoever things are written in the Bible are for our learning, and we ought to be numbered among those who absorb this simple truth:  our tendency is to look to stuff and our own abilities rather than God our Maker.  We can be proud of our achievements or accomplishments when our plans are completed instead of humbling ourselves before the LORD, looking to Him and regarding His plans as paramount.  How good is the exhortation of Proverbs 3:5-6 for us today in light of these things:  "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."  The words of our LORD Jesus echo from the Old Testament in Isaiah 45:22:  "Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other."

Let us hear the voice of our Saviour and look to Him today and regard God who plans to seek and save the lost who trust in Him.  He is our refuge and provides the Living Water of the Holy Spirit, and in Him we find rest for our souls who faithfully directs our paths.

Overcoming Evil with Good

In 1 Chronicles 7, there is an obscure account of the tragic deaths of the sons of Ephraim, Ezer and Elead, at the hands of the men of Gath over the theft of cattle.  It is unclear whether the sons of Ephraim or the men of Gath were the aggressors.  It seems most likely men from Gath came to steal cattle from the sons of Ephraim during their sojourn in Egypt.  It is also possible the sons of Ephraim, during a trip to Gath before the enslavement of the Hebrews, attempted to take cattle from Philistines and it resulted in their death.  Ephraim was rightly devastated by the death of his sons, and his grief and sorrow continued for some time.  His mourning for the evil which had befallen his house continued to the birth of his next son as 1 Chronicles 7:23 tells us:  "And when he went in to his wife, she conceived and bore a son; and he called his name Beriah, because tragedy had come upon his house."  Beriah means, "in evil."  It seems evil had overtaken Ephraim and his house, and he was profoundly affected by his great loss.

The life of Ephraim shows us how we can be more negatively impacted by grief and feelings of loss than being encouraged by all God has given us.  It is no sin to love others and to care deeply about them, to be overwhelmed by emotions and feelings God has provided us by His grace.  But it is sinful to remain hopeless and despair when God remains good.  Though we live in a world filled with evil (and we are all contributors to the downward spiral in our natural state), we can be glad it need not overcome us.  The Son of God Jesus Christ came into this world and experienced the wickedness of this fallen world in full, for He was betrayed, mocked, condemned and murdered though He was righteous and without sin.  In embracing the human experience He embraced every sinner by His sacrifice, not just to empathise with us but to provide redemption, reconciliation, restoration, atonement, healing and eternal life.  Words fail to describe in full the awesome works God has done through the Gospel for all who trust in Christ, and He has brought enduring hope to lost, hurting, dying sinners.

Paul wrote to Christian believers in Romans 12:21, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."  Israel described his days on earth as "few and evil" compared to his fathers, and evil which flourished in Ephraim's day has continued until now.  Though we live in evil days, through faith in Jesus Christ evil can still be overcome by good--as sure as sinners can be made saints by the Gospel.  Jesus said to His disciples, "Be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world," and He demonstrated all power to overcome death (the consequences of sin) by rising from the dead and remains victorious in eternal glory.  To "overcome" means to conquer or prevail.  Christ makes us overcomers when we are born again by faith in Jesus and then willingly submit to Him, presenting ourselves to Him as living sacrifices.  Rather than being conformed to the world, we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, approving of God's will and practicing it (Romans 12:1-2).

Since we are called to overcome evil with good, we must learn to discern between God's ways and the wisdom of this world.  Romans 12:9 says, "Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good."  We can be easily overtaken and overcome by evil when we have embraced hypocrisy in our hearts, loving what is evil and being unfaithful to do and think on what is good.  Our love of God prompts us to be faithful to Him in practice:  wouldn't it be a shame for acts of devotion and obedience to God to resemble a "fling" because we remain married and cling to evil?   God's word is able to pierce our hearts and stir our conscience, revealing wickedness in us to repent of and guiding us to do what is good as Psalm 119:104-105 says:  "Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."  Praise the LORD we are not at the mercy of evil, for the mercies of our good God are great.  Knowing death has been conquered by Christ, by His strength and wisdom we can choose to hate evil and do what is good every day--even to rejoice in a sorrowful season.

Giving Jesus a Try

When buying clothes at the shops, often there are changing rooms where clothes can be tried on in privacy to determine how well they fit.  It makes perfect sense to try before buying something, like when free samples of food are being offered at Costco.  If a shopper is curious to see what food tastes like, trying it themselves helps them make an educated decision.  It is common these days with the amount of online shopping available to have a period of time where free returns are possible if something does not fit, match the description or a buyer is dissatisfied with the product.  There are even a host of influencers who "try before you buy" and provide feedback for prospective buyers based on their experiences.  The whole point of trying before buying is to see if a product fits your needs and meets your expectations.

Because these are the common implications of trying things for ourselves, I am not a fan of encouraging others to "give Jesus a try," almost reducing Him to a bite of food to see if we enjoy it or not.  The amazing things about receiving Jesus by faith as the Son of God and Messiah is that He transforms us from within.  If we approach Jesus as something we can take or leave depending on if our expectations are met or our personal benefit is obtained, we are not coming to Him as sinners desperate for salvation or forgiveness.  Many people who came to faith in Christ, based on what we observe in the New Testament, experienced an uptick in conflict, persecution and trials for their faith.  Faithful Christians did not come to Jesus because He "worked" for them, but because they realised they needed Him for salvation, forgiveness and eternal life.  Those who try Jesus like a shopper choosing clothes may just put Him in the charity bin when their lives begin chafing from unmet expectations, and they will be put off ever trying Him again.

It is a strange approach to try Jesus to see how He works for us when we have been created and exist to serve and glorify Him.  Because this view of a relationship with Jesus Christ is upside down, it is no surprise when Jesus does not work out due to lack of faith in Him.  The one who tries food knows what tastes and textures they prefer; the ones trying on clothes knows their size and styles they find attractive.  Jesus is God made flesh and thus is nothing like anyone we have ever seen or known.  He cannot fit us because we are naturally unfit for Him.  Yet after we sinners are born again through the power of the Gospel, we are made new creations and the temple of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.  God puts within us a capacity to think, do, say and desire what never entered into our minds before by His presence.

It may be people have legitimately come to faith in Jesus because they "gave Him a try," for God is able to reveal Himself to lost sinners by innumerable ways.  Many people have been saved by God's grace even when we came to Him for largely selfish reasons.  But let us not ignore the implications of urging people to give Jesus a try, for then we put them in the judgment seat only Jesus Christ is worthy of sitting in.  Better to show people their sinfulness and need for a Saviour than to suggest Jesus will bow to their expectations of Him--for it is we who are called to bow before Jesus as sovereign LORD and King.  Those who lose their lives for Christ's sake will find eternal life, and wrath abides on those who remain on the throne of their lives who view Jesus as an accessory that suits them as they are (Matthew 16:25; John 3:36).

Having come to the almighty God in faith, David encouraged God's people to pursue a relationship with the LORD in practical experience in Psalm 34:8:  "Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!"  Children of God can have complete confidence in the goodness of God and the blessings He provides for all who trust in Him.  Having tasted of God's grace, we are urged by Peter to lay aside all sin and desire the sincere milk of the word like newborn babes (1 Peter 2:1-2).  Knowing Jesus first loved us, our call is to love Him and exercise ourselves to godliness, living out Gospel truth by obedience to Him.  Rather than chasing the spiritual experiences or giftings of fellow Christians, we are called to pursue Christ and grow in grace.  We are called to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, our lives surrendered to Christ as LORD for His glory (Phil. 2:10-12).  God desires our faith and obedience to Him would grow, and God who has set us apart for Himself sanctifies us as we labour for His sake.  This isn't something we are called to try:  it is who Jesus has created us to be.

The Right Cheek

During a Bible study last night we discussed how the words of Jesus are commonly rendered, "Turn the other cheek."  It is significant, however, that Jesus specifically mentioned the right cheek in Matthew 5:38-40:  "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also."  Our study leader has an Assyrian background, and he explained that to hit someone on the right cheek meant a backhand slap as the left hand was reserved for unclean tasks.  In the Middle East to slap someone with the back of the hand is a personal insult and was intended to shame and demean rather than wound.  If someone slapped your right cheek with their left hand, that may have been even more insulting than a backhand!  This insight helps us to make sense of what Jesus meant, that Christians are not to retaliate when we are slighted or insulted, when we are treated as an unclean thing.  There is nothing wrong with fleeing or defending ourselves, our family and nation when attacked, as this is consistent throughout the scriptures when God's people were beset by enemies.

The following verse doubles-down on this theme.  If someone was sued for their tunic that covered their skin (which for us would be an undergarment), they were to part as easily with their cloak which was their outer and more expensive covering.  Under the Law of Moses, a garment received as a pledge was required to be returned before nightfall so the person could be warm and sleep.  In 1 Chronicles 19 when David sent messengers to Hanun king of Ammon to comfort him after his father's death, he was fooled to believe David's ambassadors were spies so he cut off their beards and cut their garments in the middle to expose their buttocks to shame them.  Jesus taught His disciples to endure shame and humiliation without seeking to avenge ourselves even when their treatment was unjust and unkind.  Spurgeon said on the subject, "Yet even in a country where justice can be had, we are not to resort to law for every personal wrong."  Knowing we are protected and provided for by God, perfect peace from Jesus is ours and in Him we find rest for our souls.

Jesus bore the ultimate humiliation when He was wrongfully accused, arrested and crucified.  The pictorial renderings of Christ's crucifixion typically include a covering for His private areas, but from a biblical and historical perspective we can know He was stripped nude, beaten and flogged without mercy.  John 19:2-3 tells us how the Romans mocked Christ:  "And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 Then they said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with their hands."  When they arrived at the site of the crucifixion, the scripture tell us they took both his outer and inner covering, splitting the linen among themselves and cast lots for His coat.  The Jewish scribes and Pharisees taunted Jesus as He hung on the cross, mocking Him as He suffered.  Crucifixion was excruciatingly painful and it was also shameful.  Yet Jesus endured all this affliction without threatening concerning future judgment and was silent like a lamb before its shearers.  His prayer was, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Having been born again by Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit we can keep Christ perpetually in view when we suffer shame for Christ's sake as is written in Hebrews 12:1-3:  "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls."  Jesus gave shame the back of His hand, so to speak, for He treated shame as nothing for the joy that was set before Him to redeem lost sinners.  By considering Christ and the hostility He endured, we receive strength and encouragement in our LORD to continue following Him when we face persecution and shame for His name.  Since our Saviour suffered for our sakes, we are divinely enabled to take up our cross gladly and suffer shame for Him.

Our Praise is Of God

As I read of the line of king David in 1 Chronicles, there is a notable contrast between the consistency of David's sons reigning in Jerusalem and the upheaval in the northern kingdom.  While kings in the north and their many sons were snuffed out again and again for a new line to be established, David's sons ruled until the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and took Israel into captivity for 70 years.  Amazingly and according to God's promise, David's line continued even without a throne and went all the way to Jesus--where in a natural sense it ended because Jesus was never married and did not sire a son or daughter.  With eyes of faith we comprehend what Jesus did by the power of the Gospel, for He has innumerable progeny as John 1:12-13 says:  "...But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

This truth ought to impact the perspective of those who seek or long for an earthly legacy of children and grandchildren.  Our family name may continue for generations, but our earthly legacy will someday end; we will not live to see it endure.  I wonder if Joseph and Mary weren't a little disappointed Jesus did not marry or have children like many young men did.  Jesus immersed Himself in the business of His heavenly Father by making saints of sinners, people born again by faith in Him.  Though voluntarily celibate, there was no one more fruitful than Jesus Christ.  God spoke to the foreigner and eunuchs on the subject of divine belonging and spiritual fruitfulness trumping that of having children in Isaiah 56:3-5:  "Do not let the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD Speak, saying, "The LORD has utterly separated me from His people"; nor let the eunuch say, "Here I am, a dry tree." 4 For thus says the LORD: "To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, and choose what pleases Me, and hold fast My covenant, 5 even to them I will give in My house and within My walls a place and a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off."  Our satisfaction is found by being joined to Jesus Christ in faith and being a child of God--not by having a child to carry on our family name.

Seeing the line of Jesus Christ multiply and expand is a great blessing to all God's children, for we are in Him and He is us.  He has given us an eternal inheritance with Him in heaven, and we are called by His name.  I have heard some people share romantic notions of their arrival into heaven and being met or greeted by people who had been saved through their ministry with thanks and gratitude.  To me, this sounds woefully inappropriate and out of place in the presence of Jesus Christ.  Wouldn't every one of those people who are born again and redeemed be like the cleansed leper who returned to thank Jesus and be worshipping at His feet--not at the feet of His messenger and servant?  The thought of people thanking me in heaven for anything good I have done on earth is unpleasant and repulsive when the whole point of our creation and salvation is for us all is to be united together in thanking the LORD Jesus and giving Him honour He alone is worthy of.  Somehow we have a knack of making heaven about us and being honoured by men, and I want no part of it.

While personal compliments can be a source of encouragement, it is far more satisfying to hear a testimony of what God has done and is doing in your life.  John had no greater joy than to hear his children were walking in the truth, and pastors and parishioners alike have no greater joy than to hear of how awesome Jesus is from awestruck fellow believers.  When people are given glory by men the wise hand it over to the LORD for His credit and honour, and when we hear of God's ministry in the lives of people we can all celebrate before almighty God together.  It is wonderful God chooses to use people and ministries as tools in His hands to accomplish fruitful labour, yet all our usefulness and capacity for good is found in Jesus Christ alone by His grace.  In Christ we have a name better than that of having sons and daughters, for we have an everlasting name that shall not be cut off even after our lives on earth end.  The praise of men is a little thing indeed, and it is good not to seek it.  Having entered into the covenant in Christ's own blood, our praise is of God.  Hearing "Well done!" from God is what we ought to prize because He is holy and glorious above all.

Transformational Teaching

When we read the Sermon on the Mount delivered by Jesus to His disciples, it ought to be deeply challenging to us Christians because it is not our natural way of living and thinking.  To people who grew up under the Law of Moses it was shocking how Jesus went beyond the letter of the Law and illuminated and emphasised matters of the heart.  It is important to recognise the teachings of Jesus were a monumental shift from allegiance from the Law of Moses and to Jesus Christ as the original lawgiver and present LORD.  In our day of grace it is possible to dismiss the Law because we are not "under it" but neglect to submit to Jesus our KING and sovereign.  The teachings of Jesus demonstrate all who call Him LORD ought to hear and do as He says.

For instance, Jesus said in Matthew 5:38-42:  "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away."  Many times when I read the teachings of Jesus, the contrast is so extreme from the wisdom of the world and my own inclination that I can be tempted to think of situations that must be exceptions when His commands do not apply.  But this is not the case.  We may point to sections of scripture where people resisted evil, retaliated in kind, or stood up for their legal rights, yet that does not change what Jesus said.  Jesus is not calling us to be spineless punching bags, naked and homeless because we can't help but do whatever other greedy people demand of us, but for us to depend and rely upon Him for protection and provision.  Knowing vengeance is God's and He will repay, I do not need to stand up for myself or my rights when He is my refuge.  The Judge of all the earth will do right.

Under the Law of Moses, if someone punched out your tooth you had the legal right to demand the offender's tooth be knocked out as compensation for your lost tooth.  Rather than retaliating against others, Jesus would have us generously love and serve others, praying for our enemies rather than cursing them.  Being slapped in the face physically or battered by unkind words is not open season for us to do as has been done to us.  Even if our eye has been put out on purpose, we ought to follow the command and example of Jesus to look to the LORD in faith and seek to honour Him by loving others.  We are never at the mercy of our enemies when the almighty God sits on the throne over all and is our advocate.  Demanding an eye for our eye focuses more on what we have lost, our desire for retribution and making others pay rather than rejoicing in the LORD who sees, heals and restores us.

Following Jesus is to embark on a whole new way of living by faith in Him that runs contrary to our natural thought processes and inclinations.  To those who were sued and stood to lose their clothes, Jesus said to part with your jacket too.  Is God unable to provide for our needs when He clothes the flowers with beauty?  To people who put their foot down and would not go one mile Jesus told them to go an extra mile willingly and gladly.  Can't the LORD use a walk along the road to share His love and grace with others?  Jesus said to give to those who ask and those who desire to borrow we ought not turn away.  Hasn't God been generous to forgive us every time we repent of our sin?  Isn't everything we have a gift from His hand?  God has not left us to make wise decisions alone, for He has freely provided the Holy Spirit who guides us into all truth.  As Jesus did not cater to the temptations of Satan or cave to the pressure of the Pharisees, we are never obligated to veer from following Jesus, honouring Him in all we say and do.

Righteous Destruction

When the sin of God's people in Israel multiplied before the LORD, judgment by the hand of their enemies was the LORD's righteous remedy.  They sold themselves to rebellion, sin and idolatry, so God sold them as slaves into the hands Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.  It is ironic that Israel had been given the Law of Moses, had built the temple as God's dwelling place and had priests and Levites who conducted worship and corrupted themselves, yet it was Nebuchadnezzar who did God's will in destroying Jerusalem.  God had a good purpose and plan even in displacing the people and making the city a ruin, for He would refine them and cause them to return to Him (and the land He gave them as an inheritance) at His appointed time.

Consider what is written in Isaiah 10:20-23:  "And it shall come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, will never again depend on him who defeated them, but will depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the Mighty God. 22 For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them will return; the destruction decreed shall overflow with righteousness. 23 For the Lord GOD of hosts will make a determined end in the midst of all the land."  For a season the children of Israel were made to depend on those who defeated them because they would depend on the LORD God in truth.  God preserved a remnant who would place their trust and reliance upon God who chastened them even as a father does his son in whom he delights.  Though it seemed no good could come from the destruction and death, God had a determined end in mind for the good of His people.

God had decreed destruction that would "overflow with righteousness."  This opposes our assumption that building is good and tearing down is bad.  Tearing down is often necessary to build something better, like when a house is condemned and uninhabitable.  God was like a builder who tore down a building who possessed the skill, resources and plans to rebuild and spare no expense.  God directed Nebuchadnezzar to raze the ornate temple Solomon built to the foundation with the intent to make His people the humble temples of the Holy Spirit He would inhabit.  The physical destruction of a building dedicated to keeping the covenant of law preceded the establishment of a new covenant by grace through faith in Jesus.  The people prided themselves in the temple and gave their lives to defend it, yet God in due time would send His son Jesus to die for the sins of the world so all can be made new creations by the power of the Gospel.

Out of the wreckage of Jerusalem and a long period of captivity God would preserve a faithful remnant, and this is good for us to remember in the midst of trials and difficult seasons.  This observation should not cause us to minimise the struggle or pain people experience, that we ought to dismiss grief and troubles we or others face, but to realise God has plans to miraculously redeem them for good.  Romans 8:28-29 holds forth this assurance that is more sure and predictable than the force of gravity on earth:  "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren."  Rather than seeing predestination as God choosing some and excluding others, it is better to view it as the guarantee that all who choose to trust Jesus were first called and chosen by Him.  From the death of His only begotten Son God has brought the promise of new life He has freely extended to all.  The question is, will we receive Jesus by faith and be faithful?

Your Fear and Dread

Regardless how many times we have read the Bible or done in-depth study of it, one can never predict what God will say to us through His word.  Yesterday I received instruction concerning a defining factor in relation to conspiracies or conspiracy theories.  I differentiate the two by the first being one as a matter of fact (like when Absalom declared himself king over Israel whilst king David reigned) and the other as a fanciful, far-fetched report gained second-hand through individuals who claim to have inside information (with regular updates!), have an online presence and often are selling something.

Last night I read Isaiah 8:11-13 (NIV) that says:  "The LORD spoke to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people. He said: 12 "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. 13 The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread."  Coupled with conspiracy--whether real or imagined--are feelings of fear and dread.  When David heard his son declared himself king, there was an opportunity to justify fear of the future or what action he was to take.  Rather than being afraid of what was out of his control, David was to fear and dread the LORD Almighty whose perfect love casts out all fear.  Knowing God is sovereign and mighty over all, our Good Shepherd, provider and deliverer, we do not need to fear what man or armies can do to us.

One of the common threads in what I would call conspiracy theories is the leveraging of our own fears to spread a message, take action, doubting anything considered established or "mainstream," and to have loyalty and allegiance to those who drip feed incredible claims.  I have observed fear and dread take hold in the church and cause divisions when Y2K was a thing.  Some of those who peddled hysterical claims online or in books that were ultimately proved false (because they did not take place) have continued to profit off sowing doubt and fear in the minds of impressionable people.  The subject matter changes, but the fearmongering continues like a pyramid scheme built of fear and dread.  Dear Christian, let us be discerning about our motives in seeking out and spreading messages that are designed to put people in fear.  It is possible to foolishly wield scriptures to put people in fear of the government, possible loss of freedoms or future suffering when our aim ought to point to the holy God, the one we are to fear and dread.

The Hebrew words translated fear and dread are basically the same, and this is an example of parallelism frequently employed in Hebrew poetry.  It means "fear, terror, awe."  God is worthy to be our central focus and awesome in our eyes, able to do everything without fail.  Those who trust in God knowing He is for us have a sure refuge in time of trouble, the promise of provision and protection, and eternal and abundant life by His grace.  Due to trust in Jesus conspiracies, whether real or imagined, ought not to trouble us at all because Jesus has overcome the world, provided perfect peace and gives us all that pertains to life and godliness.  Your fear and dread is a hallowed space that only the LORD Almighty is worthy of.  When tempted to fear what man can do, praise the LORD for what He has done and has promised to do.

Taking a Stand

This morning at church I did something out of the ordinary for me by inviting people to stand in repentance for sin and to pray together.  I explained to the congregation that until now God has given us all opportunity to repent of our sin, yet repentance is something we can neglect.  We can feel shame or guilt over sin, be disappointed in ourselves for continuing to sin, or be troubled by the consequences for our sin but never actually repent of it with contrition before the LORD.  As a shepherd leads sheep to the water and it is up to them to drink, so it is for those who preach and teach the word of God and seek to lead people to walk in God's ways.  Those who drink deeply of the living water of the Holy Spirit only do so because God has first drawn them.

One reason why it is not my first inclination to ask people to respond to a sermon in church publicly is because it is the easy thing to do.  Please don't misunderstand me:  there can be quite a battle that rages within a person that makes going forward, standing or even raising a hand very difficult to do.  I faced this battle many times during my Christian walk.  But the situation is contrived in an environment where much of the pressure we feel to respond is because of those around us and what they may be doing or thinking.  Having received an exhortation to repent of our sin, we can feel pressure to comply and demonstrate we are listening and doing what is right.  There can be countless reasons people stand or go forward at an invitation that have nothing to do with obedience or submission to God.

At a youth camp I spoke at last week, a youth pastor gave an invitation to people to raise their hands, to repeat a prayer and to go forward.  These are all good things to do when prompted by faith in God and submission to Him.  Just because some will go because their friends are going does not mean taking a stand for Jesus in response to an invitation is without merit.  However, the real stand of repentance is not taken when every eye is closed and head is bowed in the sanctuary but is when no one else is around and you are sitting at your computer and tempted to look at porn, when you want to have another glass of wine, when no one knows you are eyeing a pretty woman or a handsome man.  The stand of repentance of sin is taken when the pressure is on at work to lie and you choose to tell the truth even when it comes at a price; it is in confessing selfish attitudes and cursing in your heart to God who knows full well the corruption of our flesh.

I was blessed beyond measure at camp when a sea of young people were jumping and singing up front to worship music and a young man remained sitting in his seat, scowling with his arms crossed.  It may have been the Holy Spirit was speaking louder and more clearly to that lad who seemed to dig in his heels when all his friends were up front having fun.  While at one stage I may have rejoiced over all those kids who went forward to worship--imagining I had something to do with it--I rejoiced over the one with arms crossed who refused to sing.  Had he made a mockery of the invitation, he would have gone up with all his friends.  But I suspect he was stewing because God was speaking.  I know that young man is deeply loved by God and it is God's will he be saved, and God has done and will do everything to redeem his soul from destruction for eternal glory.  It may be the one who looks least likely to follow Jesus can be transformed to be the one who lives for Jesus faithfully for all his days, so great is the power of our God to save.

Those who will repent of their sin and take a stand for Christ is not during a church service but in all hours of the day when there are continual temptations and opportunities to sin.  We take our stand for Christ, not in the presence of others who observe us standing in church, but before the LORD who sees the thoughts and motives of our hearts.  Going forward in a sermon after wrestling with our conscience does not provide forgiveness, salvation or sanctification but by yielding to Jesus through faith every day as His disciples, loving and trusting Him.

Counting the Cost

Today I had a chat with Christians about our need to count the cost in following Jesus.  Our saviour Jesus is not a useful addition or convenient accessory that improves our life but He is our life.  Jesus spoke about considering the cost of following Him and drew upon practical examples to teach His disciples.

Jesus said in Luke 14:25-33, "Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them,
26  "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it--29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.' 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 
So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple."

The required cost of discipleship is to love and be loyal to Jesus above anything and all others (including ourselves), even those who are related to us.  It means dying to self, choosing to daily lay our lives down in obedience to Jesus as He lay down His own life for the sake of sinners.  A servant is not above his master, and since our Master Jesus freely sacrificed Himself for the glory of God in obedience to His will, so ought we to do in living a life that pleases Him.  Jesus spoke about how a person building a tower considers the cost of the project before starting construction.  A tower could not fulfil its purpose if only a foundation was built.  Everyone would recognise the folly and how laughable it would be to start a project that could not be finished.  All the effort and financial investment would be wasted on a "tower" that never stood.

The second illustration Jesus used was a king on the cusp of battle who was severely undermanned.  The king needed to decide if victory was assured or at least probable with his current fighting force.  If it turned out the king faced a battle he could not win, it would be wise to send a delegation to ask for conditions of peace so he, his army and kingdom would be preserved.  This common sense is also true concerning Christians.  If we are unwilling to bear our cross and come after Jesus, if we do not want to go where He is going and build our lives upon His wisdom, choosing to hear His voice and obey Him, it makes a mockery of Jesus and discipleship.  Those who lose their lives for Christ sake will find them, and those who refuse to forsake their lives--their ways, plans, ambitions, fleshly desires, assumptions, thoughts and sins--cannot be His disciples.  You might as well try to fight a battle you cannot possibly win.  Following Jesus means we follow Him exclusively and continually His way.

Paul, a faithful disciple of Jesus, wrote in Philippians 3:7-11 about how loss for Christ's sake resulted only in gain:  "But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead."  When Paul shed the skin of everything he once prided himself in, he found himself enriched beyond measure through righteousness by faith in Jesus, the knowledge of Jesus, the power of resurrection to new and eternal life, and the fellowship of His sufferings.  Paul was richer in the end, and it all came at the cost of Christ's shed blood and by the power of the Gospel.  We lose nothing in giving everything God requires because God gives us freely everything that pertains to life and godliness.

We decide to follow Jesus knowing it is not a one-time decision but a choice we are content and glad to make every day as we hear and obey His voice.  If we will be new creations by faith in Jesus, we also ought to walk in newness of life.  Otherwise we are like a silly builder who starts building a tower without a foundation, materials or money to finish the task and assumes the project will be soon finished.  It is like a foolish king who sends his troops into a battle where no victory is possible.  Trusting, obeying and following Jesus is not merely a priority for us but the only option for His disciples.  If we are unwilling to agree to Christ's conditions or trust in Him, then we cannot be His disciples--simple as that.

Brought Into God's World

We have been studying through the book of Ruth at Teen Camp this year and I have been blessed to consider Christ as our Redeemer through the book.  During this study I have better observed the choices Ruth made beyond deciding to accompany Naomi to Bethlehem.  After clinging to Naomi at the crossroads between Moab and Israel, Ruth continued to listen to and follow her guidance.

When Boaz saw Ruth gleaning in his field, he told her not to go in anyone else's field and to stay with his servant girls.  Naomi said the same thing after she brought back a large haul of grain.  Then Ruth was bold and courageous to obey her mother-in-law when instructed to go to Boaz as he slept on the threshing floor and to uncover his feet.  "I'll do everything you say," Ruth responded and followed through on all she said.  Her inclination may have been to bustle around and distract herself with activity as she awaited word from Boaz, but she hearkened to the wise advice:  "Sit still, my daughter."

The act of Boaz spreading his garment over Ruth meant that she was coming under the protection of Boaz, to be brought into his world--even as she had come to trust under the shadow of the wings of the almighty God.  Boaz was not to be likened to God in her eyes, but Boaz desired to fulfill his role under law as a kinsman redeemer and raise up seed for the house of Elimelech by taking Ruth as wife.  I read from a Jewish perspective that a person's world ends where his coat ends, and thus a married person is one whose garment extends over other people as well.  It is a beautiful picture of how we, as foreigners of the kingdom of God, come to Jesus Christ by faith to enter His world and enjoy an eternal relationship with Him.

Jesus far exceeds Boaz in His kindness toward us, for Boaz agreed to Ruth's request because she was known to be a virtuous woman.  She had washed, anointed herself and wore clean clothes.  Not one of us is virtuous in coming to Christ for salvation; none of us can cleanse ourselves from the stench of death and stain of sin.  Yet while we were yet sinners, Christ demonstrated His love by dying for us!  By the power of the Gospel we have been given the right to become children of God, to have Him as our Father, and to enter His world--His kingdom where righteousness dwells.  Out of the wreckage of our lives tainted with self and sin, God makes us new creations and fruitful by His grace.

The question is:  will we draw near to Jesus in faith and obedience, or will we continue to go our own way alone?  Will we seek satisfaction in less than God or discover contentment by being brought into His world by a relationship with Jesus Christ?  With all Jesus has done, the choice is ours.

LORD of Hosts With Us

"The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah"
Psalm 46:6-7

The contrast presented here between the kingdoms of the earth and the power of God is striking.  While the nations rage like the sea, troubled and powerful, the LORD rules on high over all.  Kingdoms and nations are agitated in rage; people are moved even as the earth rotates around the sun.  Yet God does not need to move to utter His voice and melt the earth in majesty.  People react in response to what they see or feel, but God acts to further His divine plans and purposes.  He is always ahead of the most perceptive person or spirit, for the intent of hearts are laid bare before Him.

The sons of Korah acknowledged "The LORD of hosts is with us," and this remains true when nations rage.  When the rhetoric starts flying, the sabres are rattling or missiles are firing, the LORD of hosts is with us and the God of Jacob is our refuge.  Knowing what God has already said and promised in His word is a firm foundation for our feet in all seasons of life.  The LORD of hosts remains in command of every spirit and world power, and the nations are a drop in the bucket compared to Him.  At His word kings are raised up and deposed, and we can rest assured of His mercy even in judgment.

The "God of Jacob is our refuge," sang the psalmists, and a glance at the life of Jacob reveals a man whose wits and physical strength were no match for his many enemies that were of his own household.  His brother Esau who at one stage plotted to kill him was a mighty hunter when Jacob was a man of the tents.  Jacob's father-in-law Laban exceeded him with his conniving ways, tricking him into years of labour and changing his wages.  Unreasonable expectations were placed upon Jacob to protect the flock, yet God was his refuge.  In the midst of family drama, scandals in the community or famine in the land, God protected Jacob all His days and caused him to prevail and grow in faith.

Have you grown to appreciate who God is for you, that He is with you and a refuge?  The LORD is not like a bomb shelter or tower that is far away or difficult to access, for God is with us in the person of the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus.  He is acutely aware of our needs even before we ask Him for help,  Sometimes we resemble those troubled and raging nations when faith in Christ provides sure rest and refuge in our LORD.  Our refuge has come to us in the person of Jesus, and He will never leave or forsake us.  May we learn as Ruth to come to trust in the shelter of His wings, knowing He is with us wherever we go.  The God of nations is a shelter for the one who is humble before Him.

Humble in God's Sight

"But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation."
Galatians 6:14-15

Being born again by grace through faith in Jesus Christ is the one way to be righteous in God's sight.  Though the Gentile believers in the church in Galatia once knew this, they caved to the influence of pressure exerted from Jewish legalists to keep the Law of Moses as a means of righteousness.  What appeared to be submission and humility before God and His Law was in reality the strivings of the flesh to accomplish what only the Spirit of God could do.  People began to pride themselves in their sacrifices and looked down on others who did not follow their legalistic convictions.  Circumcision did not make anyone closer to God, and ironically taking pride in subjection to the rite did the opposite.

My son came home from leading a Christian camp this week with the hairstyle of a monk, and as a family we were intrigued by the significance of an odd haircut of monastic orders.  Apparently hair was cut in a singular fashion as an act of humility and identification with Christ because the ring of hair around the head loosely resembled the circular crown of thorns Jesus wore on the cross.  It is possible a haircut could be a means of showing humility, yet because it is an outward act it can easily be motivated by a desire to be seen by others and gain favour in their eyes.  It is important to examine our own hearts that our motivation of our hearts is pure before the LORD, for a good act is quickly corrupted when it is not by faith in God.  It is what we do in secret where true humility shines.

Jesus taught His disciples concerning this in Matthew 6:1-6:  "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly. 5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."

There is nothing wrong with doing charitable deeds or praying and being seen by others doing so:  what is wrong is when we do charitable deeds and pray in public to be seen by others.  Jesus said it is hypocrisy to do anything charitable or good because of the glory you may gain from others.  Jesus emphasised again and again God sees what we do in secret, and He will reward us openly for it in His time and way.  It is faith in God that is satisfied by this arrangement, and it exercises humility God enables us to do by virtue of our new birth.  When we humble ourselves in the sight of the LORD, He will exalt us.  Those who humble ourselves to be exalted continue to operate according to fleshly and worldly principles.  A haircut can be humbling, yet those who wear it to appear humble are anything but.

The Mouse Problem

When we first moved into our current house, it wasn't long before we had an uninvited visitor:  a mouse that easily slipped under the garage door to explore what had previously been his domain.  I suppose during the build phase of the house the mouse had become accustomed to scouring the place for snacks left by workers, and with no garage door or interior doors this was easily done under the cover of night.  I immediately took steps to set out traps in the garage and constructed an aluminium "mouse guard" mounted underneath the door to prevent any further incursions.  Thankfully, it wasn't long before the mouse problem was no more.

One thing I discovered after baiting mousetraps with a little peanut butter (I recommend American style) is it can attract crickets that chirp all night.  Crickets and roaches love peanut butter and easily clean those traps in a night without setting them off.  Since I didn't want to trade one pest for another, I decided to keep the empty traps in place--just in case another mouse happened to wander in and look around.  Over time, the traps snapped closed for one reason or another due to wind from a leaf blower or a nudge from a box or broom, and I didn't bother setting them again.  There was no evidence of mice, and over time only one of the clean traps remained loaded by the internal garage door.  This week as I was coming in from gathering the recycle, I noticed the bare trap had caught a mouse!  Upon closer inspection, the mouse was at the early stages of decomposition with a bit of a smell.  Unless the trap had been set, a new mouse problem was set to start all over again.

The situation illustrated well the persistence of vermin and my need for vigilance when there is no evidence of a "mouse problem."  Due to a series of factors--especially the lack of mice--I had become complacent in my policing of the traps and ensuring they were ready for action.  With the exception of the sole trap that was set, the other traps served no purpose whatsoever.  Without thinking about it, I had adopted a reactionary approach to pest control rather than active prevention.  Had I seen chewed plastic or cardboard, if I noticed animal waste, I would have sprung into action to do everything in my power to eradicate destructive and potential disease-carrying pests.  The reality is there are mice outside, and experience has taught me I cannot keep them out of the garage.  Since I am aware of this, it is up to me to be observant and persistent to prevent the pests from making my garage their abode.

Being watchful of the state of a garage is important, and how much more do we need to be vigilant to be on guard of the state of our minds and hearts!  Mice and the devil share at least one thing in common, that they are opportunistic and prefer to operate under the cover of darkness.  1 Peter 5:8-9 says, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world."  I have never lived in a place where lions roar and prowl around looking for prey, and I imagine it could take a close call to impress upon a person the seriousness of the life-threatening risk lions present.  Christians are called to be vigilant to resist the devil by steadfastness through our faith in Christ, knowing we are not alone in the conflict.  Not one of us can match the devil's persistence, and thank God we have a Good Shepherd Jesus who is always aware of Satan's schemes.  The apostle continued in 1 Peter 5:10:  "But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you."

It takes a surprising amount of effort to keep a garage tidy and free of vermin, and it is far more difficult to resist an unseen enemy who is as sneaky and powerful as Satan.  We might not be able to get on top of a pest problem without professional help, but we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.  God has called us to glory, and we are called to walk by faith in Jesus and live righteously.  When we recognise sinful thoughts, attitudes and desires, we are to take them captive even as a snap-trap catches a mouse.  Unlike traps that can be set that allow us to be passive and check on them occasionally (maybe only after we smell something), we are called to be sober and vigilant when the roaring is faint or afar off.  We must be aware that the problems we must be mindful of are primarily not "out there" in the world or in others, it is in the confines of our own flesh, hearts and minds where this battle is fought and won.  Even as springtime brings an influx of mice and insects, so a season with personal spiritual growth supplies opportunity for sin to sneak in and find a comfortable place to visit, hang out and finally settle in.
