Be At Peace

The Bible is filled with life situations that provide encouraging illustrations for God's people who trust in Him.  In this way God's word is living and powerful to provide guidance that shifts our focus from troubles to the LORD, from what is unknown to God who knows us, and from what is totally out of our control to submit to the sovereign God who does everything.  During our lives we regularly arrive at the crossroads of needing to choose if we will lean on our own understanding or rely upon the LORD for all things. I was recently struck by an important decision of King Jehoshaphat after he became king.  Prior to him, his fathers made building cities and fortifying them a high priority.  Rehoboam, Abijah, and Asa were involved in extensive efforts to capture cities and they constructed walls, towers and secure gates.  These building projects were wise and circumspect, good stewardship of resources to provide security for the people.  Jehoshaphat did not ...

The Wise and Foolish Exam

" Better a poor and wise youth t han an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more ." Ecclesiastes 4:13 It is said that with age comes wisdom, and this certainly can be true.  It is also true that a good and wise king can make foolish decisions and be unwilling to be instructed or corrected.  A king is in a position of great power and influence, yet life experience and political savvy is no substitute for wisdom that only comes from God.  Only those who maintain a humble posture in faith before the LORD will be divinely enabled to walk in wisdom. A wise youth and a foolish king both at times need to be admonished, for there is no man who does not sin.  It is not primarily the absence of sin that marks the wise or foolish person but their response to instruction and correction reveals their hearts truly.   Proverbs 1:7 says, " The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, b ut fools despise wisdom and instruction ."  Fools are reveal...

God's Word and Ours

There may be times when people have risen to the occasion when given responsibilities when they had shown little responsibility previously--but this is the exception to the rule.  The one who cannot or will not keep pace with the footmen cannot match the speed of horses.  Until people have a genuine change of heart and mind, they will continue to do as the Steely Dan song goes:  " You go back, jack, do it again...wheel turning round and round ."  In the song a man swears he is not a gambling man, but finds himself back in Vegas with a handle of a slot machine in his hand and playing cards with hopes to win big money.  What people say is no guarantee they will ever do as they say.  From history and experience, it is more likely the opposite will eventually be true. In 2 Chronicles 15 , Azariah the prophet spoke to king Asa of Judah and encouraged him to seek the LORD, to exert his strength to put away idols in his kingdom and turn to God.  The king and ...

A Lonely, Broken Heart

"Owner of a Lonely Heart" was a number one song in 1984, the most popular song by the progressive rock band Yes.  When I was in high school, the song was played occasionally on the local classic rock radio station.  It has a catchy chorus, and catchy songs are usually among the more popular ones.  It is amazing that I have not heard this song played for a very long time, yet it was ringing in my ears clearly for no obvious reason this morning.  It occurred to me that the reason I was reminded of the chorus of this song was to ponder the question:  is the message true? Overall the song smacks very much of self-help books that focus on your responsibility to take charge of your life to improve it--to take your chances by making a move.  The basic message of the chorus goes, " Owner of a lonely heart (much better than a) owner of a broken heart. "  From a biblical perspective, there is no need to be lonely when we have the LORD who will never leave or for...

Distinguishing God's Service

Many Christians who have come to faith in God through Jesus look at the Law of Moses as ridiculously complex and burdensome--even unnecessary due to the Gospel.  It would be unwise to hold to this view, especially since the lawgiver Jesus said, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light."  Since God does not change, this was true for the Jews who kept the Law of Moses by comparison to all other masters to whom they bound themselves.  As keeping God's commandments was His will for His people, He was always faithful to help them walk in His ways.  No man ever kept the Law perfectly because no man (except Christ) is perfect. The children of Israel toiled under cruel taskmasters in Egypt and they groaned to God in bondage.  They were forced to bake bricks and build cities while Pharaoh decided to slaughter their male children in the river because they had grown strong.  God delivered His people from their crushing burdens and gave them His Laws.  He was the g...

God's Completed Wrath

I was encouraged while reading Revelation 15 when John observed seven angels parading plagues out of the temple of God in heaven.  Each of them was given a bowl that was filled with the wrath of God that would be a manifest judgment of God through the plague poured out.  It struck me how these plagues came from God and were intended to accomplish His perfect will at the right time.  Though we cannot see a plague as a good thing in itself, knowing God is wise, sovereign and good moves us to worship God when He administers judgment and wrath. It occurred to me I have often expressed gratitude and praise to God that He is just, but I have neglected to worship God for His wrath He has revealed and will one day pour out bowl after bowl.  Because God is good and righteous, every judgment He makes and action He takes is upright and good.  His ways and thoughts are higher than ours, and thus it is faith in God that enables us to thank and praise God like the martyrs, p...

Drawn By Love

An illustration many Christians are familiar with concerns a common way how shepherds dealt with wayward lambs or sheep.  The story goes a shepherd would carefully break the leg of the sheep, immobilise the limb, and carry the animal around.  By needing to rely upon the shepherd for everything, a strong bond was forged between the sheep and shepherd and the wandering issue was over.  A problem I have with this story (one I have likely perpetuated over the years) is there is no biblical evidence of this practice.  There is scant or any evidence outside the Bible this was ever a common way to correct sheep that wander.  I place this among the often parroted illustrations because we heard it from someone we respect and it made sense at the time.  The more I think about it, however, the less sense it makes. Let me preface this by saying, I have never cared for a flock of sheep or even one little lamb.  My only interactions with sheep was at a petting zoo....

God's Exceptional Glory

Of all people, kings and queens might be among those most difficult to impress.  Their wealth, fame, power, possessions and land holdings are vast in comparison to their subjects.  They have the authority, ability and right to take anything they want for themselves, to demand even the lives of anyone who may be a threat to their rule and prosperity.  For this reason I find it remarkable how the queen of Sheba was amazed and overwhelmed by the wisdom and glory of king Solomon.  Reports of king Solomon had reached her ears and were intriguing enough to compel her to personally pay a visit to Jerusalem. After the queen of Sheba was granted a tour of king Solomon's courts, she was overwhelmed by everything she saw--the architecture, clothing and service of his servants, and the grandeur of his entrance to the house of the LORD.  2 Chronicles 9:5-6 says, " Then she said to the king: "It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your ...

God Prepares Hearts

Even in societies that have forsaken God, God is gracious and faithful to preserve a remnant for Himself.  The prophet Elijah lamented he was the "only one" who was zealous for the LORD's sake in Israel, but God had reserved 7,000 who had not bowed once to Baal ( 1 Kings 19:18 ).  After Jeroboam became king over the 10 northern tribes of Israel, he was instrumental in establishing the worship of idols throughout the kingdom.  He rejected God fearing priests and Levites from serving the LORD and sanctified priests of the lowest (character-wise) of his subjects. The priests and Levites took a stand against the king's abominable idolatry by leaving the lands given them as an inheritance and moving their families to the territory of Judah and the city of Jerusalem.  These men refused to bow the knee to the calf idols Jeroboam set up and remained faithful to the LORD.  The rise of king-sanctioned idolatry resulted in a revival of true worship in the hearts of those w...

Scraping Off Scale

The LORD gave me a good object lesson today with the lime tree at our house that has been beset by scale insects.  No matter what treatments or care I have provided, the saga always continues!  When I stand at the kitchen window I always am on the lookout for scale, and there are times I can see them easily.  What I have learned is whether I see them or not from the kitchen, if I walk up close and look patiently and hard, gently lifting branches and leaves by hand, I will most certainly find scale all over.  Even though the tree is diminutive and the leaves fairly sparse (likely a combination of highly alkaline soil, Neem spray and those troublesome pests!), once I start searching for scale to remove by hand it can be a time-consuming process. It struck me how finding scale under one branch or leaf leads to me finding more scale elsewhere.  This is an apt illustration how every person in the church of Jesus Christ has their problems and sin that easily latches o...

Building Our Lives Right

Yesterday during a Bible study at church, our group briefly discussed  1 Corinthians 3:11-13 :  " For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  12  Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,  13  each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is ."  More important than a structure itself is that it is built securely upon a foundation.  Our Bible study leader showed how Jesus took aim at hypocrites who focused on appearances and what could be seen by men whilst they neglected to put the teachings of the LORD Jesus into practice.  God looks at the heart--what is under the surface--and repenting of our hypocrisy, hearing and doing what Jesus says is the way to build our lives on a solid foundation. A point that was made concerning the variou...

Solomon's Wise Request

King Solomon demonstrated great wisdom before he famously requested wisdom from God.  He would write in  Proverbs 4:5-7 :  " Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.  6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; l ove her, and she will keep you.  7 Wisdom is the principal thing; t herefore get wisdom.  a nd in all your getting, get understanding ."  God is the only source of wisdom, and the Bible shows us how Jesus Christ has become wisdom for us through the Gospel.  Solomon's interaction with God who revealed Himself to Solomon reveals a parallel with the way Jesus directed His disciples to pray. After Solomon offered a thousand sacrifices before the LORD in Gibeon, that night God appeared to Solomon and said, " Ask!  What shall I give you ?"  If you were posed such a question, how might you respond?  I suspect our responses would be similar to rehearsed answers of what we would...

Willing Giving

" So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver ." 2 Corinthians 9:7 There is no one more generous and giving than the almighty God who created mankind, for He has given us everything we have and enjoy.  Without us asking God has given us life, and having given us His only begotten Son Jesus we have freely received from Him all that pertains to life and godliness.  God has demonstrated His love for all people through Jesus, and He also loves a cheerful giver.  God loves when people give willingly and cheerfully like He does.  Knowing God loves a cheerful giver encourages us to align our practices to walk in His ways.  The Bible Knowledge Commentary says, " God prizes not the size of the gift (cf. Acts 11:29; 1 Cor. 16:2), but the giver’s sincerity (not reluctantly), spontaneity (not under compulsion), and joyful willingness (a cheerful giver) ." In the Old Testament we see occasions where God's...

God Heeds Our Voice

Though God has all power, wisdom and majesty, He does not crush or trample the will of His subjects.  He does not resemble the cruel dictators who slaughter their own people as well as adversaries, whose closest advisors are only a small step from death due to their leader's suspicions they are as power-hungry as he is.  The history of Israel clearly reveals God was a King who listened to His people, and He allowed them to have their own way.  There would be consequences for forsaking Him and choosing to have a man rule over them as king, but God would not force anyone to submit to Him.  For men "might makes right," yet God is always right and mighty in His restraint and patience. There came a day when the people of Israel approached Samuel and told him three things:  that he was old, his sons were not devout like him, and they wanted a king to rule over them like all the other nations.  It was at the third point Samuel bristled with indignation, and he bro...

Hanging Out With Jesus

I was reminded recently of a conversation I had with a Christian brother who grew up in the Midwest and moved to California later in life.  He said one of the things he missed about his culture back home was it was acceptable and expected for friends to just "drop by" for a chat when they were in the area.  Having grown up and lived in California for a large portion of my life, I can affirm some do see it as inconsiderate and intrusive to show up at a friend's house without first calling ahead as a courtesy.  Mobile phones have made this even more expected.  My friend preferred the freedom to offer and receive hospitality at a moment's notice, for people to drop whatever they were doing to open the door and welcome you into their home--or vice versa.  He valued this accessibility and hospitality as a basic courtesy that was foreign to many Californians he met. I had a friend at high school who lived in a gated residence on a prominent hill in the East County of ...

Fresh Vision?

Because God looks at the heart as well as appearances, it is good for us to consider not only words we say but what they imply.  It is common in Christians circles for biblical phrases to become hackneyed, far removed from their original context, or be plain misleading.  As much as we like to think we are circumspect thinkers, the most wise among us can be reduced to parroting what we have heard or follow along with respected Christian leaders without much critical thought.  It is wise to exercise caution when we encounter terms or phrases we do not first observe in scripture. Case in point:  today I saw a post of a Christian ministry that explained people from all over the country gathered to pray over a "fresh vision."  Frankly I am not exactly sure what is meant by this phrase, but I can say what it clearly implies.  What it implies is the original or previous "vision" for ministry has become a bit old or outdated.  Perhaps expectations have not bee...

Upheld From Birth

As we go through life, it is natural for us to become burdened by all manner of things because our understanding is finite, our strength is limited, we soon grow weary and can feel overwhelmed.  Even the most mighty workmen among us need a break in the heat and to sleep, and the cumulative effect of our exertions over time begin to weigh heavily upon us.  Because we are strong and able to do things, we tend to take more upon ourselves than we can carry easily and wear ourselves out.  Even Moses had to learn this lesson by experience.  Seeing the responses from people in the U.S. concerning the recent election, it appears people from all walks of life continue to feel the weight of the world rests upon their shoulders regardless of who is in office.  History has revealed having a majority in government does not ensure those in your own party will be willing work together (much less the opposition!), and this knowledge does nothing to lighten a taxing mental load...

Expanding in Service

There are many churches that operate well, are spiritually healthy and fruitful without having a permanent place of worship.  It is common in Australia for churches to hire out schools or rooms on Sunday because this is what is available and affordable.  That's how it was for the church I grew up attending, and I faintly remember the services being held in the cafeteria of a local high school.  Whether a church fellowship meets house to house, rents a hall, is in the midst of a renovation, building project, or settled in a permanent location, it is always a good season to serve the LORD in one accord with each another. In a passage I read today, it was instructive on how the service of the Levites changed when the temple was built in Jerusalem.  During decades in the wilderness, one main role of the Levites was to haul the tabernacle and the articles around, to set up and dismantle the tabernacle as the LORD led His people like a flock to the promised land.  A l...

Weary of God?

God looks for people who love, desire and seek Him willingly.  In the book of Isaiah , God pointed out the irony wild animals like owls and jackals (considered unclean under the Law of Moses) honoured Him for water He provided them to drink, but He received less honour from His people whom He redeemed and created to worship Him in spirit and truth. The LORD, the holy Redeemer of Israel said in  Isaiah 43:22-24 :  " But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob; a nd you have been weary of Me, O Israel.  23  You have not brought Me the sheep for your burnt offerings, n or have you honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not caused you to serve with grain offerings,  n or wearied you with incense.  24  You have bought Me no sweet cane with money, n or have you satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices;  b ut you have burdened Me with your sins,  y ou have wearied Me with your iniquities ."  God observed people of Israel who ha...

According to the Spirit

Jesus has done a marvellous thing by the power of the Gospel for all sinners who repent and trust in Him.  As a man raised under Judaism and the Law of Moses, he realised the Law could not save him but only condemn.  It was extremely effective to reveal to self-righteous sinners their sin, yet it gave no reprieve, mercy or hope for the guilty before God or man. After coming to faith in Jesus Christ, Paul wrote in  Romans 8:1-2 , " There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death ."  In the previous chapter Paul provided an example of a woman who was bound by the law to her husband, but if her husband died she was free of that law.  It was considered adultery under the Law of Moses to marry another man while married.  A widow under Law, however, was not be deem...
