God Logic
God is more than impressive, for He is awesome beyond comprehension. It is amazing God our Creator has revealed Himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ, speaks to us in His word, and helps guide us by the power of the Holy Spirit. His ways and thoughts are completely above ours, and at most we merely perceive the edges of His marvellous works (Job 26:14). Because the divide between God's miraculous abilities and ours is so vast, we often bring Him down to our size through unbelief. When we feel helpless, we assume help cannot be found. God is not always presently in the front of our minds, so we tend to lean on our own understanding and abilities rather than placing our confidence in God.
I was immeasurably blessed by a passage I recently read in Jeremiah 33:19-22: "And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying, 20 "Thus says the LORD: 'If you can break My covenant with
the day and My covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night
in their season, 21 then My covenant
may also be broken with David My servant, so that he shall not have a son to
reign on his throne, and with the Levites, the priests, My ministers. 22 As the host of heaven cannot be
numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the descendants
of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me.'" God spoke to Jeremiah concerning His faithfulness and power to keep His covenant regardless of what anyone says or does on earth. God put forth His covenant with day and night spoken in Genesis 8:22, "While
the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and
summer, and day and night shall not cease." This is one reason why I was never caught up in the hubbub over "global warming" and "climate change," as if man could destroy the earth God promised to sustain day and night, cycling through the seasons of winter and summer.
For thousands of years of recorded history before us and every day of our lives we have observed this to be true: God has been faithful to keep His covenant without fail. God said, "If you can break my covenant with day and night, then my covenant with David could also be broken." God's logic is since no one can break God's covenant with day and night, His covenant with David will stand. Then God went on to say, "As the galaxies, stars and planets cannot be numbered nor the sand of the sea measured, I will multiply the descendants of David My servant and Levites who minister to Me." We are unable to count all the planets and stars God has made, and thus we can trust Him to do what we cannot. I do not fret when I hear reports of the numbers of Christian churches declining as if hope is lost, for God has promised to multiply His people and faithful ministers.
Consider the logic behind God's word to Jeremiah: the fact we cannot break God's covenant with day and night ought to instill all confidence God will do all He has promised. Our inability points to God's total sufficiency. We are unable to count the stars--or countless other things God has made--and He who made them not only knows the number of His people but will multiply them. Elijah lamented he was the only man faithful to God remaining in Israel, yet God revealed to him there were 7,000 He reserved for Himself who had not bowed the knee to idols. Should we be afraid when our reserves are running low when God has promised to supply all our needs--the God who created the stars and knows them all by name? Psalm 147:2-5 says, "The
LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel. 3 He heals the
brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. 4 He counts the number
of the stars; He calls them all by name. 5 Great is our
Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is
infinite."
Anything we cannot do can prompt us to trust and rely on God who keeps His promises. Paul wrote concerning Abraham the father of faith in Romans 4:20-22, "He
did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in
faith, giving glory to God, 21 and
being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore "it was accounted
to him for righteousness." As we cannot number the stars or measure the sand of the sea, God will do all He has said without fail. Faith is not wishing but being convinced God is worthy of our trust. How sound is God's logic! Though we cannot count the stars, we can always count on God.
