David Danced Naked?

Our Bible study last night reminded me of an awkward interaction at camp when a worship leader emphasised David's joyful abandon in worshipping God when the Ark of God was brought into Jerusalem.  "He was so caught up in worship, he was dancing naked."  He looked at me to affirm the truth he claimed.  "He was naked, right?"  Actually, no:  David was not dancing in the nude.  The Bible passages say clearly he was wearing fine linen and a linen ephod, similar to what the priests or Levites wore ( 2 Samuel 6:14 ; 1 Chron. 15:7 ).  The idea of David being naked is likely based on the snide comments of Michal, David's wife, about David being "uncovered," which was to say he was not wearing his royal robes.  She was offended because she viewed his behaviour as immodest and inappropriate as a king.  Thinking someone should "cover up" does not assume total nudity. Anxieties and Comfort

There is a classic sketch where Bob Newhart is a therapist who repeatedly and agressively urges his client to "Stop it!" when she shares how fear is negatively affecting her life.  It would be wonderful if we could simply break the power of addictions, fear, worry and anxiety by willpower alone, but often our experience shows us we lack the ability to fundamentally change ourselves.  Newhart's character put the onus of change on his client who found herself unable to change--and that is why she sought professional help.  While the dialogue and delivery in the sketch is hilarious, it illustates how hopeless and helpless people can feel when their deliverance and healing depends upon them doing what they cannot do. Micaiah the Son of Imlah

One of the men in the Bible I truly admire is found in 2 Chronicles 18:  Micaiah the son of Imlah.  He was a faithful prophet to God when he faced a lot of pressure to fall in line with Ahab's 400 prophets.  The wicked king Ahab couldn't stand the man!  When Jehoshaphat asked if they could inquire of the LORD before going to battle in Ramoth-Gilead, Ahab quickly produced his 400 prophets.  Their consensus?  "Go up; for God will deliver it into the king's hand."  We are not told how, but Jehoshaphat discerned these 400 prophets were not speaking for God.  So he politely asked Ahab, "Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might inquire of him?" Ahab was blunt.  2 Chronicles 18:7 tells us, " So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man by whom we may inquire of the LORD; but I hate him, because he never prophesies good concerning me, but always evil.
